Tumblr is planning to add support for the open, decentralized social networking protocol ActivityPub, that is powering social networking software for platforms such as the Twitter alternative Mastadon.
The tech is also used by platforms such as the Instagram-like Pixelfed, video streaming service PeerTube, and others.
This positions Tumblr to move from only being a niche blogging platform to veer more fluidly into becoming a larger, decentralized social network, as user growth has jumped since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and the changes that have happened since.
According to the ActivityPub website, the protocol “provides a client-to-server API for creating, updating, and deleting content, as well as a federal server-to-server API for delivering notifications and subscribing to content.”
